Chapter Fourteen

Tyler

The last five days have dragged by as I’ve waited for today to come. Josh will finally be moving in. I know it's silly, and I shouldn't be so excited for him to be living just a few feet from my house, but I am. Even if nothing ever happens between us physically, he’s a cool guy to hang out with.

I don't have a lot of guy friends. In fact, other than Kim and Darren at the store, I don't really have a lot of friends at all. I have some acquaintances, customers that I'm friendly with, and my list of regular hookups. But there isn't really anybody I would call to go watch a movie with or to grab dinner with except Josh. He’s the first person who's been interested in spending time with me when sex was completely off the table.

It's nice.

Although, I hope sex isn’t off the table forever. But even if it is, I'll be okay with that.

And despite my better judgment, I let myself fantasize about poker nights at his place and maybe getting together to watch movies on his off nights. That is, of course, on the nights when he's not out with Chad at a bar. That whole night still rubs me the wrong way. I shouldn't feel hurt by the fact that hanging out with me is coffee or pizza, but hanging out with Chad is beers and dancing.

But it doesn't matter.

I'll take what I can get. For now.

I'm just heading out the door to grab a sandwich when Josh almost walks right into me. He’s hidden behind two large cardboard boxes, but I’d recognize that body anywhere. “Oh. Hi, Josh.”

“Hey, Tyler.” He stumbles backward to avoid me and bounces off the boxes Chad’s carrying.

“Dude, watch it or all your shit is gonna end up scattered across the sidewalk.”

“Sorry.” Josh turns to Chad before looking back at me. “Sorry. I probably should've called to let you know we were coming, but Chad offered to help move some stuff in his truck, so I figured I should take advantage of the free labor.”

Chad clears his throat from behind the boxes. “Uh, hate to break it to you, champ, but this labor ain’t free. You're buying me lunch afterward. An expensive lunch.”

Josh ignores Chad. “Anyway, is it okay for me to start taking stuff up?”

“Of course.” I hold the door for them as they maneuver the boxes inside. “Let me go grab the keys, and I’ll meet you out back.”

Once I give Josh his set of keys, I hang around for a minute and offer to help bring stuff up. Josh and Chad both tell me not to worry about it. Although I don't feel like they're trying to get rid of me, I know they definitely aren't asking me to stay. So, I bow out and head to the deli to grab lunch.

By the time I get back, Chad’s truck is gone, and I wonder if they're done unpacking. My question is answered an hour later when the truck is back and full of furniture.
